We will be having our 3rd Annual Scholarship Fundraiser at Pizza Shoppe in Lee's Summit on Tuesday, June 11. Pizza Shoppe will donate 10% of the money spent between 4 and 9 p.m. if you turn in the form below when you pay. I will be there throughout the fundraiser and hope to see a lot of you. We have a good time with this every year - I take pictures throughout the evening and post a few of them to this website. If you can't make it but still want to donate, information about how to do that is available on this downloadable form as well or contact me.
I just got back from working as a counselor and bridge teacher at the week long residential Youth Bridge Camp in Carlinville, IL. What a great camp and a great group of people. This past week was the 4th year this camp has been held but it was just my first year participating. We had record numbers this year with 49 campers. Lots of fun had by all and a lot of good bridge learning and bridge playing got done along the way. Besides bridge - there was swimming, tennis, archery, ping-pong, glow in the dark dodgeball and much more!
There is a Unit 131 Camp Scholarship(s) now available! Here is the 2013 Campership Application!
See the map with dots indicating where everybody was from (students and counselors both). Let's get some more dots on there next year from the Kansas City area!
Here I am with my co-counselor and girls in our cabin. Taken on the last day - do I look a little tired?
I was the bridge director and teacher on a cruise of the Panama Canal from San Diego to Fort Lauderdale, on Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas. A couple of players from Lee's Summit were on the cruise as well - just a happy coincidence, they didn't know I would be there! I'll let you know when I do this again. It wasn't all work - a lot of fun too!
Seven youth students of mine made the trip to Council Bluffs, Iowa for the 2012 Nebraska Regional on Thursday, August 2. Yes, I know we were in Iowa for a Nebraska Regional, but Nebraska was quite literally right next door! Bill Gates and Warren Buffet weren't there this year, but professional bridge player Billy Miller talked to them, giving them some friendly advice and having fun with some interesting stories from his career as well. Oh, by the way, 6 of those 7 students had a great day picking up masterpoints!
It was Youth Day at the Nebraska Regional Aug. 4, 2011. Four of my students made it there for the day, all 4 winning in the morning pairs competition. Then Warren Buffet and Bill Gates came to visit and talk with them during lunch. Bill was nice enough to pose with us. (Warren was swamped signing autographs!) Two of these students went on to win in the afternoon pairs game as well! Their grandmother and an aunt brought them up to play for the day but the really fun part was that these ladies went to play in the Novice Pairs Game (their very first try at duplicate!) that afternoon while the kids were busy playing.
Youth Day at the NE Regional this year will be Thursday Aug. 2, 2012. Who knows who you'll get to meet?
